TiviMate IPTV Setup: 6 Steps + 8 Best Settings

Published · Updated · 15 min read · IPTVIVA

TiviMate is the app we hear recommended most often for Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV, and once you've used its TV guide and favorites system, it's easy to see why. This guide covers the 6 steps to get it installed and running, then 8 settings worth adjusting afterward that most people never find on their own.

In this guide

What you need

  • An Android TV, Google TV, Android box or Fire TV device, connected to your TV and the internet
  • Your Xtream Codes (server URL, username, password) or M3U URL, sent to you when you order or start a free trial
  • About five minutes

Why TiviMate over other players?

TiviMate's main advantage over most alternatives is its TV guide: a genuine timeline view of what's on now and next across your whole channel list, closer to a traditional cable guide than most IPTV apps manage. Combined with a favorites system that lets you pin the channels you actually watch out of a list running into the thousands, it consistently comes out ahead in comparisons for anyone using Fire TV or Android TV as their main setup. Deciding between apps generally? See our comparison of 10 IPTV apps. This guide assumes you've already chosen TiviMate.

6 steps to set up TiviMate

Step 1: Install TiviMate

On Android TV or Google TV, install it from the Google Play Store. On Fire TV, install it from the Amazon Appstore. If it isn't listed for your specific Fire TV model, use Downloader with the link from the developer's official website. Our Fire TV Stick guide covers setting Downloader up from scratch.

Step 2: Open the app and add a playlist

Open TiviMate and choose Add playlist on the first screen.

Step 3: Choose your login type

Pick Xtream Codes (recommended, since it also loads your TV guide and on-demand library automatically) or M3U playlist if that's what you were sent.

Step 4: Enter your subscription details

For Xtream Codes, enter the server URL, username and password exactly as we sent them. For an M3U playlist, paste the M3U URL instead. Confirm, and give the playlist a name if TiviMate asks for one, which is useful mainly if you plan to add a second playlist later.

Step 5: Wait for the import

TiviMate downloads your channel list and the TV guide (EPG) in the background. The first import typically takes a minute or two, sometimes longer for very large channel lists, so let it finish rather than backing out.

Step 6: Pick a channel and confirm it plays

Once the import completes, choose a channel you recognise and check both picture and sound play normally. If it does, you're set up. If not, see troubleshooting below.

8 settings worth changing

Most people finish the 6 steps above and never open TiviMate's settings menu again, which means missing several features that make daily use noticeably better.

1. Set up favorites

Long-press a channel and add it to Favorites, then create custom groups (for example "Sports" or "News") from Settings → Interface → Channels. With a list running into the thousands, this is the single biggest quality-of-life change available.

2. Refresh the EPG manually if it looks empty

Go to Settings → Playlists, select your playlist and choose Refresh EPG. This solves the "TV guide is blank" problem more often than reinstalling the app does. To get the most from the guide and catch-up, see our beginner's guide to the EPG and catch-up.

3. Choose the right video decoder

In Settings → Playback, TiviMate lets you choose between hardware and software decoding. Hardware decoding is usually smoother on modern devices. See stuttering? Try switching this setting. It's the most common fix for playback issues that a fast internet connection alone doesn't solve. See our buffering guide for the full troubleshooting order.

4. Turn on the mini EPG overlay

Settings → Interface → Player has an option to show a small guide overlay when you change channels, so you can see what's playing on nearby channels without leaving full-screen playback.

5. Set a default audio and subtitle language

If your channel list includes international channels, Settings → Playback → Audio/Subtitles lets you set a preferred language so TiviMate selects it automatically instead of defaulting to whatever the channel provides first.

6. Enable parental controls

Settings → Interface → Parental control lets you lock specific channels or categories behind a PIN, useful if children also use the same TV.

7. Adjust the channel list layout

TiviMate offers a few different layouts for browsing channels (list, grid and a few variants). Settings → Interface → Channels lets you pick whichever is fastest for how you actually browse, especially useful with a large channel count.

8. Back up your settings

Settings → General → Backup and restore lets you export your favorites, groups and settings to a file. If you ever reinstall TiviMate or set it up on a second device, restoring from this backup saves redoing all of the above from scratch.

TiviMate on different devices: what changes

The 6 steps and 8 settings above apply everywhere, but a few small things differ by device type.

Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube. Installed via the Amazon Appstore or Downloader. Navigation uses the Fire TV remote's D-pad, and voice search ("Alexa, open TiviMate") works to jump straight in. Older Fire TV Stick Lite models can feel slower navigating a large channel list. See our Fire TV Stick guide for device-specific tips.

Android TV and Google TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense, Chromecast with Google TV, and similar). Installed via the Google Play Store, generally the smoothest installation path since these devices are TiviMate's primary target platform. Remote and voice search work the same way as Fire TV.

Standalone Android TV boxes (Android box devices not tied to a TV brand). Installed via Google Play Store if Play Services are included, or via a downloaded APK file if not. Performance varies more than on branded devices, since box hardware quality differs widely. A cheap, unbranded box can struggle with a large channel list even with everything set up correctly.

NVIDIA Shield and similar higher-powered boxes. TiviMate performs at its best here, since these devices have more processing power than a typical Fire TV Stick, which shows up mainly in faster channel-list scrolling and smoother 4K decoding.

Comparing TiviMate to plain M3U players

It's worth being specific about why TiviMate is worth the extra five minutes of setup compared to just opening an M3U link in a basic player like VLC.

TiviMate Basic M3U player (e.g. VLC)
TV guide (EPG) Full timeline view, refreshable None
Favorites and custom groups Yes No
On-demand library Loads automatically with Xtream Codes Not supported
Parental controls Yes No
Interface built for TV remotes Yes Partial
Best for Daily viewing on a TV Quick tests, confirming a login works

This is why we recommend testing your subscription in VLC (see our Windows and Mac guide) if you just want a thirty-second confirmation that your login works, but setting up TiviMate as your actual daily app on a TV.

TiviMate Premium: what it adds

TiviMate has a free version, which is everything covered above, and an optional paid upgrade called TiviMate Premium, sold by its own developer and unrelated to your IPTVIVA subscription. Premium mainly adds extra customization options, additional EPG sources and a few interface refinements. The core functionality, playing your channels, the TV guide, favorites, works fully on the free version. Rather avoid any app-side cost at all? The free version is not a limited trial. It's a complete, permanently free tier, and IPTV Smarters Pro is a fully free alternative if you'd rather skip TiviMate's upsell entirely.

When TiviMate isn't the right choice

TiviMate is built for Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV specifically, so it isn't an option everywhere. On a Samsung or LG Smart TV? Those run their own operating systems (Tizen and webOS) that don't support TiviMate at all. Use IBO Player or Hot Player instead, covered in our Samsung and LG guide. On iPhone or iPad, TiviMate isn't available on iOS either. See our iPhone and iPad guide for the apps that are. Just want a thirty-second test of your subscription on a Windows or Mac computer? VLC is faster to set up than TiviMate for that specific purpose, even though TiviMate itself doesn't run on desktop operating systems. In short, TiviMate is the strongest choice specifically for Android-based TV devices, and the other device guides above cover everywhere else.

Getting the most out of the TV guide

The TV guide (EPG) is TiviMate's strongest feature relative to other players, and a few habits make it noticeably more useful day to day:

  • Set your time zone correctly in Settings → General, since an incorrect time zone shifts every guide listing and makes it look like the wrong program is airing.
  • Use the guide to plan ahead, not just to see what's on now. Scrolling forward shows upcoming programming across every channel, which is faster than flipping through channels one at a time to find something.
  • Press the guide button while watching to bring up the mini overlay (see setting 4) rather than leaving full-screen playback, so you don't lose your place.
  • Star or favorite programs directly from the guide where the option is available, which some TiviMate versions support as a reminder feature.

Building a channel list that works for you

With a channel count running into the thousands, an unorganised list is one of the most common reasons people say TiviMate "feels overwhelming" at first. A structured approach fixes this in a few minutes:

  1. Start with your must-watch channels. Add your local networks, your sports channels and two or three others you know you'll use regularly to Favorites first.
  2. Create groups by category, for example "Local," "Sports," "News" and "Kids," rather than relying on the default full list.
  3. Hide or ignore categories you'll never use. If your subscription includes channels in languages or regions you don't watch, TiviMate lets you exclude entire categories from the main browsing view, which shortens the list considerably.
  4. Revisit it after your first week. Once you know which channels you actually watch, refine your favorites and groups rather than trying to get it perfect on day one.

Troubleshooting

Playlist won't import, or shows an error. Double-check the server URL, username and password were entered exactly as sent, with no extra spaces. Copying and pasting avoids the typos that cause this most often.

TV guide is empty after import. Go to Settings → Playlists → your playlist → Refresh EPG. If it's still empty after a refresh, confirm you used Xtream Codes rather than a plain M3U link, since M3U alone sometimes doesn't include guide data.

Channels play audio but no picture, or vice versa. Try switching the video decoder setting (see setting 3 above), which resolves most audio/video sync and playback issues on TiviMate specifically.

App feels slow or laggy navigating the channel list. This is more often the device than TiviMate itself, especially on older Fire TV Stick Lite models. Restarting the device clears temporary memory and often helps. See our Fire TV Stick guide for device-specific tips.

Buffering during playback. Confirm your speed meets the recommended minimum (10–15 Mbps HD, 25 Mbps or more for 4K) and work through our 9 ways to fix buffering in order.

Channels keep freezing rather than just buffering occasionally. This points more toward a connection stability issue than TiviMate itself, since freezing usually means a brief, full drop in connection rather than gradual slowness. Our guide on preventing IPTV freezing covers wiring your device and other habits that address this at the source.

Favorites or settings disappeared after an update. Occasionally an app update resets some preferences. If you made a backup (see setting 8), restore from it. If not, rebuilding favorites from a well-organized channel list (see above) only takes a few minutes.

TiviMate won't open at all after installing. Restart the device first, since a partial or interrupted installation is a more common cause than an actual app problem. If it still won't open, uninstall completely and reinstall from the Play Store or Amazon Appstore rather than Downloader, if that's an option for your device.

The bottom line

TiviMate's six-step setup takes about five minutes, and the real value comes from the eight settings most people never open: favorites, a working TV guide, the right decoder for your device, and a backup you can restore from if you ever switch devices. Spend the extra few minutes on those and daily use goes from "an app that plays channels" to genuinely the fastest way to find what you want to watch. If you'd rather test everything first, start with the free trial and set up TiviMate on your own device before choosing a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is TiviMate free?

Yes, the core app is fully free with no time limit. TiviMate Premium is an optional paid upgrade from the developer with extra customization, separate from your subscription.

Does TiviMate work on Fire TV Stick and Android TV the same way?

Yes, the setup steps and settings are identical across both platforms. Only where you install it from differs (Amazon Appstore for Fire TV, Google Play Store for Android TV and Google TV).

Why is my TiviMate TV guide empty?

Most often because the playlist was added as a plain M3U link rather than Xtream Codes, or because the guide simply needs a manual refresh. See setting 2 above.

Can I use TiviMate on more than one device?

Yes, install it on as many devices as you like. How many can stream at the same time depends on your plan: Standard allows one simultaneous connection, Premium allows two. See the pricing page.

What's the difference between Xtream Codes and M3U in TiviMate?

Xtream Codes (a server URL, username and password) loads the TV guide and on-demand library automatically. A plain M3U link is a single playlist URL that may only load the channel list. See our full comparison.

TiviMate keeps crashing. What should I try?

Update the app to the latest version first, then restart the device. If it persists, uninstall and reinstall TiviMate, then use your Settings → General → Backup and restore file (if you made one) to bring back your favorites and groups quickly.

How do I know if TiviMate is using Xtream Codes correctly?

Check the TV guide right after setup. If program listings and on-demand titles both appear without any manual action on your part, Xtream Codes is working as intended. If only the channel list loaded with no guide data, re-check that you selected Xtream Codes rather than M3U in step 3 and that the server URL, username and password were entered exactly as sent.

Can I add more than one playlist to TiviMate?

Yes, TiviMate supports multiple playlists in the same app, which some people use to keep a test playlist separate from their main one, or to combine channels from more than one source. Add a second one the same way as the first, through Settings → Playlists → Add playlist.

Does TiviMate support catch-up TV or replay?

Support for catch-up/replay depends on the individual channel and on Xtream Codes being used rather than a plain M3U link, since that's what carries the extra metadata catch-up needs. Where a channel supports it, TiviMate shows a replay option directly from the TV guide.

How do I move my TiviMate setup to a new device?

Use Settings → General → Backup and restore on your old device to export a settings file, then use the matching restore option on the new device after installing TiviMate and logging in again. This brings back your favorites and channel groups without rebuilding them manually.

Why does everyone recommend TiviMate specifically over other Android TV apps?

Mainly the combination of its TV guide and favorites system, which most alternatives don't match together. Plenty of other apps play channels perfectly well. TiviMate's advantage is in daily usability once you have a large channel list to navigate, which is most of what separates a five-minute setup from an app you actually enjoy using every day.

Is there a downside to using TiviMate over a simpler app?

The main trade-off is the extra setup time spent on the 8 settings above, compared to an app that works reasonably well out of the box with fewer options to configure. For most people, the one-time setup cost is worth the daily improvement. Rather skip configuration entirely? IPTV Smarters Pro (covered in our apps comparison) is a simpler, fully free alternative.

I switched from another app to TiviMate. Do I need new login details?

No, your Xtream Codes or M3U details work the same in any compatible app, TiviMate included. Just add them as a new playlist during setup, exactly as described in steps 2–4 above.

Does TiviMate work with every IPTV subscription, or only certain providers?

TiviMate works with any subscription that provides a standard Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link, which covers the large majority of independent IPTV services, IPTVIVA included. It isn't tied to any single provider, so a TiviMate setup you're already comfortable with carries over directly if you ever switch subscriptions.
