IPTV on iPhone & iPad: 5 Steps + 6 Data-Saving Tips

Published · Updated · 15 min read · IPTVIVA

An iPhone or iPad makes a genuinely useful second screen for IPTV: catching a game in another room, checking a score while the TV is on something else, or watching on the go. This guide covers the 5 steps to set it up with IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV, then 6 tips specifically for managing mobile data and getting the stream onto a bigger screen when you want one.

In this guide

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, running a reasonably current iOS or iPadOS version
  • Your Xtream Codes or M3U URL, sent to you when you order or start a free trial
  • About five minutes

Why use IPTV on a phone or tablet at all

It's worth being clear about what mobile IPTV is genuinely good for, since it's a different use case than watching on a TV. A phone or iPad works well for checking a score or catching highlights without turning on the main TV, watching in a room without a TV at all, keeping up with a game while traveling on Wi-Fi, and giving a second person in the household their own screen at the same time as someone else watches the TV, on Premium's two simultaneous connections. It's a weaker fit for long-form, sit-down viewing of a full movie, where a bigger screen is simply a better experience. For that, see getting it on the big screen below.

IPTV Smarters Pro vs GSE Smart IPTV

Both are free App Store apps, both support Xtream Codes and M3U, and both work fully with your subscription.

  • IPTV Smarters Pro has the simpler, more guided setup flow and is the app we most often see subscribers land on for iOS, partly because it's also available on Android, Fire TV, Windows and Mac, so your experience stays consistent if you watch on more than one device type.
  • GSE Smart IPTV offers more customization (multiple playlists, more detailed EPG settings, parental controls) at the cost of a slightly steeper learning curve, and is a good second option if IPTV Smarters Pro doesn't feel right.

This guide uses IPTV Smarters Pro for the numbered steps, since it's the more common starting point. The same information, Xtream Codes or M3U, server URL, username, password, applies identically in GSE Smart IPTV's setup screen.

5 steps to set up IPTV

Step 1: Install a player app

Open the App Store and install IPTV Smarters Pro (or GSE Smart IPTV if you'd rather start there).

Step 2: Add a new user profile

Open the app and tap Add user → Login with Xtream Codes API. If you were sent an M3U link instead, choose the M3U URL option on the same screen.

Step 3: Enter your subscription details

Type any name you like for the profile (this is just a label for your own reference), then enter the username, password and server URL we sent you for Xtream Codes, or the M3U URL if that's what you're using. Copy and paste from our message rather than typing, since a single mistyped character is the most common cause of a failed login.

Step 4: Wait for the import

Tap Add user. The app pulls in your channel list and TV guide, which usually takes under a minute.

Step 5: Open Live TV and pick a channel

Tap Live TV, wait for the channel list to fully load, and choose a channel you recognise to confirm both picture and sound play correctly.

6 tips for mobile data and picture quality

Streaming video is the most data-hungry thing most apps do on a phone, so these six habits matter more on iOS than on a device that's always on home Wi-Fi.

1. Use Wi-Fi whenever you can

HD streaming can use a meaningful chunk of a mobile data plan quickly, especially over a longer viewing session. Switching to Wi-Fi (Settings → Wi-Fi) whenever you're somewhere with a network available is the single biggest data-saving habit.

2. Check your carrier's data plan limits before a long viewing session

If you plan to watch an extended period on cellular data, for example a full game while out, check your carrier plan's data allowance first. Streaming for a couple of hours can use several gigabytes depending on quality.

3. Lower the quality setting on cellular data

Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV let you adjust playback quality in their settings. Dropping from the highest setting to a lower one on cellular data significantly reduces data use with a smaller quality trade-off than you might expect on a phone-sized screen.

4. Turn on Low Data Mode selectively

iOS's Low Data Mode (Settings → Wi-Fi or Cellular → your network → Low Data Mode) reduces background data use across apps. Worth knowing: this can sometimes affect streaming apps too, so if playback seems unexpectedly low quality or slow to start, check whether Low Data Mode is switched on for the network you're using.

5. Download over Wi-Fi if your app supports on-demand downloads

If you plan to watch on-demand content offline later, for example on a flight or in an area with poor coverage, download it while connected to Wi-Fi rather than streaming it live over cellular, where the app supports downloads for on-demand titles.

6. Close other apps using background data

Apps refreshing content in the background (social media, cloud photo backups, podcast downloads) compete for the same bandwidth as your stream. Closing them, or checking Settings → General → Background App Refresh, frees up more of your connection for smooth playback.

Getting it on the big screen

An iPhone or iPad is a great second screen, but if you want IPTV on your TV, a few options exist beyond setting up a separate device:

  • AirPlay, built into iOS, can mirror or stream your iPhone/iPad screen to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible Smart TV. This works with IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV, though performance depends on your home Wi-Fi, since AirPlay streams over the network rather than a direct cable connection.
  • A Fire TV Stick plugged into any TV, set up separately with TiviMate, generally gives smoother, more reliable playback than mirroring from a phone, since the stick pulls the stream directly rather than relaying it through your iPhone. See our Fire TV Stick guide.
  • A Samsung or LG Smart TV with IBO Player or Hot Player installed directly is another option if you already own one. See our Samsung and LG guide.
  • Apple TV works with GSE Smart IPTV directly, since it has a tvOS version, avoiding the need for AirPlay mirroring from a separate device at all.

For a big game or an extended viewing session, setting up a dedicated TV device gives a more reliable result than relying on mirroring, though AirPlay is a perfectly reasonable option for shorter or more casual viewing.

Managing multiple profiles in the app

Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV support adding more than one "user" or profile within the same app, which is useful in a couple of specific situations:

  • Testing before switching. If you're trying a new plan or troubleshooting, adding a second profile with the same login lets you test settings changes without disturbing your main, working profile.
  • Multiple family members on one device. If more than one person uses the same iPad, separate profiles can each have their own favorites and settings, even though they're using the same underlying subscription.
  • Switching between Xtream Codes and M3U to compare which loads the TV guide and library more reliably, without deleting and re-adding your main login each time.

To add another profile, repeat Steps 2 to 4 from the app's home screen rather than the initial setup flow. Most players list existing profiles and offer an "Add" option alongside them.

Battery use while streaming

Video streaming is one of the more battery-intensive things an iPhone or iPad does, worth knowing if you plan to watch for an extended period away from a charger:

  • Lower screen brightness noticeably extends battery life during long viewing sessions, often more than any streaming-specific setting.
  • Use Wi-Fi over cellular where possible, since maintaining a cellular data connection generally uses more battery than Wi-Fi.
  • Close other apps running in the background before a long session, since background activity competes for both battery and the processing power used to decode video.
  • Low Power Mode (Settings → Battery) can extend viewing time in a pinch, though it may also reduce background app refresh and some visual effects.

Parental controls and content restrictions

If children have access to the same device, iOS's built-in Screen Time settings (Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions) can restrict which apps are available or set time limits on app usage generally, which applies to IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV the same as any other app. Within GSE Smart IPTV specifically, the app's own settings also include content restriction options for individual channels or categories, useful if you want finer control than a blanket app time limit provides.

Troubleshooting

App won't accept my login details. Copy and paste the username, password and server URL exactly as sent rather than typing them, and confirm you selected the correct login type (Xtream Codes vs M3U) matching what we sent you.

Channels load but picture stutters. Check whether you're on Wi-Fi or cellular, and if cellular, check your signal strength. On Wi-Fi, see our 9 ways to fix buffering for the full troubleshooting order. The internet-speed and connection-stability fixes apply to iOS the same as any other device.

TV guide is missing. This is more common with a plain M3U link than with Xtream Codes, since Xtream Codes carries the guide data automatically. Re-add your playlist using Xtream Codes if you have both options. See our M3U vs Xtream Codes guide. More fixes, plus how to use catch-up, in our EPG and catch-up guide.

App crashes or freezes on launch. Update the app through the App Store first, since both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV push regular fixes. If it persists, delete and reinstall the app, then re-enter your login details.

AirPlay mirroring is laggy or drops out. This is a Wi-Fi issue rather than an app issue, since AirPlay streams over your home network. Move closer to your router, or set up a dedicated TV device instead for anything you care about watching smoothly.

App works fine on Wi-Fi but not on cellular. Confirm the app has permission to use cellular data (Settings → the app's name → Cellular Data toggled on), since iOS sometimes restricts this by default for newly installed apps, which looks identical to a playback problem but is actually a permissions setting.

Picture quality looks worse on iPhone than on other devices with the same subscription. Check the app's own quality setting first (see tip 3), since it may have been set low intentionally or by default, rather than being a limitation of the device or your connection.

What to check before you contact support

A quick self-check before messaging us usually resolves the issue faster, and helps us help you if it doesn't:

  1. Confirm your iOS or iPadOS version is reasonably current (Settings → General → Software Update), since an outdated OS version occasionally causes compatibility issues with newer app releases.
  2. Confirm the app itself is updated through the App Store, since IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV both push regular fixes for playback bugs.
  3. Test your login in the other app (switch from IPTV Smarters Pro to GSE Smart IPTV or vice versa) to isolate whether the issue is app-specific or affects your subscription details generally.
  4. Note whether the problem happens on Wi-Fi, cellular, or both, since this narrows down whether it's your network or something else.
  5. Have your device model and iOS version ready (for example, "iPhone 14, iOS 18, IPTV Smarters Pro") when you message support.

The bottom line

Setting up IPTV on an iPhone or iPad takes about five minutes and makes for a genuinely useful second screen, whether that's catching a game away from the main TV or just checking in on something while you're out. The main things to manage on mobile specifically are data use (see the 6 tips above) and getting the stream onto a bigger screen when you want one, whether through AirPlay or a dedicated TV device. If you haven't subscribed yet, the free trial lets you test all of this on your own iPhone or iPad first.

Frequently asked questions

Which app is best for IPTV on iPhone or iPad?

IPTV Smarters Pro is the simplest starting point and the most consistent choice if you also watch on other device types. GSE Smart IPTV is a solid alternative with more customization if you want it.

Do I need to sign in with an Apple ID to use these apps?

No. IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV don't require any Apple ID sign-in beyond the standard App Store download. Your Xtream Codes or M3U login is separate from any Apple account and is entered directly in the app itself.

Does watching IPTV on my iPhone use a lot of data?

It can, especially in HD over an extended session. Use Wi-Fi where possible, and see tips 1–3 above for lowering data use on cellular specifically.

Can I watch IPTV on my iPhone and my TV at the same time?

Yes, if you're on the Premium plan, which allows two simultaneous connections. On Standard, only one stream can play at a time across all your devices. See the pricing page.

Does IPTV work on an iPad the same way as an iPhone?

Yes, identically. Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV are universal apps that work the same way on iPhone and iPad, just with more screen space on the iPad.

Can I cast from my iPhone to a non-Apple Smart TV?

Only if your TV or a connected device supports AirPlay specifically, since AirPlay is an Apple technology. For a non-AirPlay Smart TV, a better approach is setting up IBO Player or Hot Player directly on the TV. See our Samsung and LG guide, or use a Fire TV Stick, which works with any TV regardless of brand.

What's the difference between Xtream Codes and M3U on iOS?

The same as on any device: Xtream Codes (a server URL, username and password) loads the TV guide and on-demand library automatically, while a plain M3U link is a single playlist URL that may only load the channel list. See our full comparison.

Can I use Split View on iPad to watch IPTV while using another app?

Yes, both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV support iPadOS's Split View and Slide Over multitasking, so you can watch in a smaller window while browsing, messaging or working in another app. Playback quality can drop slightly in a smaller window on some connections, so for anything you want to watch closely, full-screen still gives the best result.

Does Do Not Disturb or Focus mode affect IPTV playback?

No, Focus modes only affect notifications and alerts, not app functionality or playback. Streaming continues normally regardless of your Focus or Do Not Disturb settings.

Does the app need to stay open in the foreground to keep streaming?

Yes. Like most video streaming apps, playback pauses if you fully leave the app or lock the screen, since iOS suspends background video for most third-party apps to conserve battery and resources. Picture-in-picture is the exception, where supported by the specific app, letting playback continue in a small floating window while you use something else.

I have an old iPhone or iPad. Will these apps still work?

Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV support a wide range of iOS versions, but very old devices (more than five or six years) may run an iOS version too old for the current app release, or may struggle with 4K decoding regardless of app version. If the App Store shows the app as unavailable for your device, that's the clearest sign your iOS version needs an update first, if your device supports one.

Can I record or download live channels to watch later?

Live channel recording isn't a standard feature in IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV. Both apps are built for live and on-demand streaming rather than DVR-style recording. Where a channel supports catch-up/replay, GSE Smart IPTV can surface it depending on the channel's own metadata, though this varies by channel.

Can I use the same login on both my iPhone and my iPad?

Yes, your Xtream Codes or M3U details work on both devices, and on as many devices in general as you like. How many can stream at the same time depends on your plan: Standard allows one simultaneous connection, Premium allows two. See the pricing page for the full comparison.

Does IPTV work the same on an Apple TV as on iPhone and iPad?

Not identically. Apple TV runs tvOS, not iOS, and uses its own app installation and interface. GSE Smart IPTV has a tvOS version that works directly on Apple TV with the same Xtream Codes or M3U login. IPTV Smarters Pro's Apple TV availability varies, so check the tvOS App Store for your Apple TV model specifically.
