How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?

Whether you're catching hockey in Toronto or a CFL game in Calgary, you want everything working fast and without fuss. IPTV streams live video over your internet connection, so the connection matters. Here is how much speed you need, and why a stable connection beats a fast one.

How much speed do you need?

These are per-stream figures with some headroom. Anyone else streaming, gaming or downloading on the same network uses part of your connection too.

Speed is not everything

A stable connection beats a fast one. A 100 Mbps line that drops out for a second at a time still causes buffering, while a steady 20 Mbps line usually does not.

How to test your connection

Run a speed test on the same network as your device, ideally at the time you usually watch, because evenings are often busier. If you can, test on the device itself.

How to improve it

• Use Ethernet where possible. Otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router.
• Restart your router from time to time.
• Pause large downloads and updates while you watch.
• Switch off any VPN as a test, because a VPN can slow the connection.
