IPTV on Samsung & LG Smart TVs in the UK: 6 Steps
Published · Updated · 15 min read · IPTVIVA
Samsung and LG Smart TVs skip Android entirely, so IPTV setup looks a bit different than on a Fire TV Stick or Android box. The player comes straight from the TV's own app store, and login runs on a MAC address and device key rather than a plain username and password. This guide covers the 6 steps with IBO Player and Hot Player, the two apps built specifically for these TVs, then the 6 problems that show up most often afterwards.

What you'll need
- A Samsung Smart TV (Tizen) or LG Smart TV (webOS), connected to the internet
- Your M3U URL or Xtream Codes (server URL, username, password), sent when you order or start a free trial
- A phone or computer, since entering your details on the player's website beats typing on a TV remote
IBO Player or Hot Player?
Both are built specifically for Samsung and LG Smart TVs, both install free, and both work fully with your subscription, so the practical answer is to try whichever one your TV's app store actually lists, since availability varies by model and software year.
- IBO Player logs in through a companion website using a MAC address and device key shown on the TV screen, rather than typing details directly on the remote. Setup gets a little faster once you're used to it, since the typing happens on a phone or computer instead.
- Hot Player lets you enter your Xtream Codes or M3U URL directly on the TV itself. It skips the companion-website step entirely, which some find more straightforward, though typing a long server URL with a TV remote is slower than IBO Player's website method.
TV's app store lists both? IBO Player is generally the more polished, widely recommended option. Use Hot Player if IBO Player isn't available for your specific model.
Setup in 6 steps
Step 1: Install a player app
Open the Samsung Smart Hub or the LG Content Store and search for IBO Player or Hot Player. Install whichever one is listed. Neither shows up? Your TV's software may need an update first (check your TV's system settings for a software update option).
Step 2: Launch the app and find your device details
Open the app you installed. IBO Player displays a MAC address and a device key directly on screen. Write both down exactly as shown, since even a single mistyped character, a zero versus the letter O is a common mix-up, causes the next step to fail. Hot Player instead jumps straight to an Add playlist option, skipping this step entirely.
Step 3: Add your playlist
For IBO Player: open the IBO Player website on your phone or computer, sign in using the MAC address and device key from Step 2, choose Add playlist, and enter your M3U URL or Xtream Codes details exactly as sent.
For Hot Player: on the TV itself, choose Xtream Codes or M3U URL, enter the details sent to you, and save.
Step 4: Wait for the sync
Whichever app you used, give it a moment to pull down your channel list after adding the playlist. Usually under a minute, occasionally longer for very large channel lists.
Step 5: Restart the app
Close and reopen the app on the TV. This matters more on Smart TVs than on other devices, since it's what triggers the app to actually load the playlist just added through the website (IBO Player) or saved (Hot Player).
Step 6: Pick a channel and confirm it plays
Choose a channel you recognise and check both picture and sound play cleanly. Works? You're set up. Something's off? See the 6 common fixes below.
Samsung Tizen vs LG webOS
Both platforms follow the same 6 steps, but a couple of small differences are worth knowing:
| Samsung (Tizen) | LG (webOS) | |
|---|---|---|
| App store | Smart Hub | LG Content Store |
| App availability | Generally wide for IBO Player/Hot Player | Similar, varies more by TV age |
| Remote navigation | D-pad or Smart remote pointer | Magic Remote pointer, faster for typing |
| Software updates | Settings → Support → Software Update | Settings → General → About This TV → Check for Updates |
LG's Magic Remote, with its pointer-based navigation, makes typing directly into Hot Player on the TV noticeably less painful than Samsung's standard remote, one reason Hot Player skews slightly more popular on LG sets specifically. On Samsung, IBO Player's website-based entry sidesteps that friction entirely, one reason it's the more commonly recommended option there.
6 common fixes
1. Neither IBO Player nor Hot Player is listed in my TV's app store
Check whether the TV's software is current (see the table above for where to look), since older software versions sometimes carry a smaller or outdated app catalogue. Update doesn't help? Your TV model or software year may simply not support either app. In that case, an inexpensive Fire TV Stick plugged into an HDMI port is a reliable alternative working on any TV regardless of age or brand.
2. The playlist doesn't appear after adding it
Double-check the MAC address and device key (IBO Player) or the server URL, username and password (Hot Player) were entered exactly, no extra spaces or mistyped characters. Restart the app (Step 5) again after confirming the details, since a fresh sync sometimes resolves this on its own.
3. Channels don't load, or the list is empty
Copy and paste the URL, username and password from our message rather than typing on a phone or TV keyboard, where most login errors come from. Using IBO Player? Confirm you signed into the correct website with your MAC address and device key, not a general account.
4. Buffering or stuttering during playback
A TV's built-in Wi-Fi antenna is typically weaker than a phone's or a dedicated streaming box's, being a smaller component fitted into a thin chassis. Use a wired Ethernet connection if the TV has a port for it, or move the router closer, and see our 9 ways to fix buffering for the complete troubleshooting order.
5. The app asks for payment or activation
Both IBO Player and Hot Player may run a free trial before asking for a one-time activation or an ongoing licence fee from their own developer, entirely separate from your IPTVIVA subscription. Expected app behaviour, not a problem with your login.
6. TV guide (EPG) is missing or blank
More common with a plain M3U link than with Xtream Codes, since Xtream Codes carries the guide data automatically. Given both, switch to Xtream Codes in Step 3. See our M3U vs Xtream Codes guide for the full difference. If the guide stays blank or the times look wrong, follow the steps in our EPG and catch-up guide.
The IBO Player website, step by step
Since IBO Player's setup happens partly on a companion website rather than entirely on the TV, it's worth a closer look than the Step 3 summary above.
- On your TV, open IBO Player. The MAC address and device key appear on the main screen. These generate automatically and don't require any account creation on your part.
- On your phone or computer, go to the IBO Player website (the exact address shows on the TV screen alongside your MAC address and device key).
- Sign in using the MAC address and device key exactly as shown, ideally with the TV screen visible while you type, since these are long strings where a single mistake causes a login failure.
- Choose "Add playlist" or the equivalent option on the website.
- Enter your M3U URL, or your Xtream Codes server URL, username and password, exactly as sent, ideally by copying and pasting from our message rather than retyping.
- Save, then return to the TV, close IBO Player fully and reopen it.
Since this two-device process, TV for the code, phone or computer for the typing, is the main source of confusion for first-time IBO Player users, going through it slowly and double-checking each field before saving avoids the most common setup mistakes.
Setting up more than one Smart TV
Adding IPTV to more than one Samsung or LG TV in the house? Repeat the 6 steps above separately on each. Worth knowing beforehand:
- Each TV gets its own MAC address and device key with IBO Player, since these generate per device, not shared. You'll go through the website sign-in separately for each TV.
- The same Xtream Codes or M3U details work on every TV. There's no separate subscription login per device. Only the app-specific identifiers (for IBO Player) differ.
- How many can stream at once depends on your plan, not the number of TVs. Standard allows one simultaneous connection, Premium allows two. Two Smart TVs in the house likely to be watched at once? Premium is the plan that supports that. See the pricing page.
- Consider different apps on different TVs (IBO Player on one, Hot Player on another) so you've always got a tested alternative if one app has trouble on a particular model.
Picture and sound settings worth checking
A few settings outside the IPTV app itself affect how well IPTV plays on a Smart TV specifically:
- Picture mode. Most Smart TVs default to a "Vivid" or "Dynamic" picture mode out of the box, which can oversharpen and distort video compared to a "Standard" or "Movie" mode. Worth comparing specifically for IPTV, since streamed video can show compression artefacts more visibly under aggressive sharpening.
- Sound output. Using a soundbar or external speakers? Confirm the TV's audio output setting matches your setup (TV speakers vs external audio), since IPTV apps sometimes default back to internal speakers after an app update even if you'd previously changed this.
- Auto power-off and screensaver timers. Some Smart TVs apply aggressive power-saving or screensaver behaviour to apps they don't recognise as a native streaming service, which can interrupt a long viewing session. Check the TV's general settings if this keeps happening.
Should you buy a streaming box instead?
Smart TV consistently struggling, app not available, weak Wi-Fi, slow navigation? Worth asking whether a cheap streaming box solves more problems than it costs. A Fire TV Stick costs relatively little, plugs into any HDMI port regardless of the TV's age or brand, and runs TiviMate, widely considered the strongest IPTV app across any platform, with a proper TV guide and favourites system neither IBO Player nor Hot Player fully matches. Setting up IPTV on a TV that's several years old? Often the faster, more reliable path. See our Fire TV Stick guide and our TiviMate setup guide if you go that route.
Before you contact support
Running through this short list first often resolves things on its own, and gives support what they need if it doesn't:
- Confirm the TV's software is current, using the path in the Tizen vs webOS table above. An outdated system version causes more app-availability and stability issues than people expect.
- Confirm you're using the correct, current MAC address and device key (IBO Player) by checking the TV screen again rather than relying on a note from an earlier attempt, in case the app's been reinstalled since.
- Try the other app. IBO Player giving trouble and Hot Player's also available for your TV? Costs nothing to try it instead, or vice versa.
- Test your subscription on another device, a phone with IPTV Smarters Pro, say, to confirm the issue's specific to the Smart TV setup rather than your subscription details themselves.
- Have the TV's exact model and app name ready when you message us ("Samsung QN65, IBO Player," for instance), since some fixes are specific to a TV model and software version.
The bottom line
Samsung and LG Smart TVs take a slightly different setup path than other devices, since IBO Player and Hot Player use a MAC address and device key or on-TV entry instead of a simple username-and-password login, but the whole process still takes under ten minutes once you know the steps. Most problems come down to a mistyped detail or a TV's app store not listing the app on older software, both fixable without extra equipment. Particular TV keeps giving trouble? A Fire TV Stick makes a reliable, inexpensive fallback working on any TV regardless of brand or age. Rather test everything first? Start with the free trial and try the setup on your own TV before choosing a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, IBO Player or Hot Player?
Neither is definitively better. Both work fully with your subscription. IBO Player's website-based login is often considered slightly more convenient on Samsung TVs, while Hot Player's on-TV entry can be quicker on LG's Magic Remote. Try whichever your TV's app store lists first.
Why do I need a MAC address and device key for IBO Player?
IBO Player uses your TV's MAC address and a device key it generates to link your playlist to that specific TV through its companion website, rather than typing a long server URL directly on a remote control.
Can I use TiviMate on a Samsung or LG Smart TV?
No, TiviMate is built for Android-based devices (Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV) and isn't available on Samsung's Tizen or LG's webOS. IBO Player and Hot Player are the equivalent apps for these platforms.
My Samsung/LG TV is a few years old. Will this still work?
Usually yes, as long as the TV's software is reasonably current and one of the two apps is available in its store. Neither listed even after a software update? A Fire TV Stick is a reliable, inexpensive alternative working regardless of the TV's age.
Do I need Xtream Codes, or is M3U fine on a Smart TV?
Either works, but Xtream Codes is recommended since it loads your TV guide and on-demand library automatically. A plain M3U link may only give you the channel list. See our full comparison.
Is Hot Player or IBO Player safer than the other?
Both are established, widely used third-party apps built specifically for IPTV playback on Samsung and LG Smart TVs, and neither has any special access to your subscription beyond playing the channels you log into. Choosing between them comes down to availability and preference, not safety.
How many Smart TVs can I use with one subscription?
Install the app and log in on as many TVs as you like. How many can stream at the same time depends on your plan: Standard allows one simultaneous connection, Premium allows two. See the pricing page.
Why does my IBO Player device key change after a while?
Some TVs regenerate the device key if the app's fully reinstalled or the TV's software resets app data, though a normal restart or update shouldn't cause this. Playlist suddenly stops working and the device key on screen doesn't match what you originally used? Re-add your playlist on the IBO Player website using the current MAC address and device key shown on the TV.
Does a wired Ethernet connection really help on a Smart TV?
Yes, often more than on other devices. Smart TV Wi-Fi antennas tend to be smaller and less powerful than those in dedicated streaming boxes or phones, so if the TV has an Ethernet port, using it typically gives a noticeably more stable connection than Wi-Fi, especially for 4K.
Can I watch IPTV on a Smart TV through a browser, without installing anything?
Not reliably. Smart TV web browsers, where available at all, generally aren't built for video streaming apps like IBO Player or Hot Player and don't support the login flow these apps use. Installing the dedicated app is the supported path.
Does it matter which year or generation my Samsung or LG TV is?
It can, mainly for app availability. Newer Tizen and webOS versions generally carry a wider, more current app catalogue, so a TV from the last two or three years is more likely to list both IBO Player and Hot Player than one from five-plus years ago. Checking for a software update, covered in the Tizen vs webOS table, is the first thing to try if the TV seems limited.
What if my Smart TV brand isn't Samsung or LG?
This guide covers Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) specifically since they're the two most common Smart TV platforms, but other brands (Sony, Hisense, TCL and others) increasingly run Android TV or Google TV rather than their own system, in which case our TiviMate setup guide applies instead. Check the TV's settings menu or manual to see which platform it runs.
