IPTV on iPhone & iPad in the UK: 5 Steps
Published · Updated · 14 min read · IPTVIVA
An iPhone or iPad turns into a genuinely handy second screen once IPTV's set up on it: checking a score from another room, keeping half an eye on a match while the TV's tuned to something else, or watching on the move on EE, Vodafone, O2 or Three data. This guide covers the 5 setup steps with IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV, then 6 tips specifically for managing mobile data and getting the stream onto a bigger screen when you fancy one.

What you'll need
- An iPhone or iPad connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, running a reasonably current iOS or iPadOS version
- Your Xtream Codes or M3U URL, sent when you order or start a free trial
- About five minutes
Why bother with IPTV on a phone at all
Worth being clear about what mobile IPTV actually suits, since it's a different use case than the living room telly. A phone or iPad works well for checking a score or catching highlights without switching on the main TV, watching in a room without one at all, following a match on the move over Wi-Fi or data, or giving someone else in the household their own screen while another person watches the TV, on Premium's two simultaneous connections. It's a weaker fit for a long, sit-down viewing of a full film, where a bigger screen is simply the better experience. For that, see casting to a bigger screen below.
IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV?
Both are free App Store apps, both support Xtream Codes and M3U, and both work fully with your subscription.
- IPTV Smarters Pro has the simpler, more guided setup and is the app most subscribers land on for iOS, partly because it's also available on Android, Fire TV, Windows and Mac, keeping things consistent if you watch on more than one device type.
- GSE Smart IPTV offers more customisation, multiple playlists, more detailed EPG settings, parental controls, at the cost of a slightly steeper learning curve, and it's a solid second option if IPTV Smarters Pro doesn't feel right.
This guide uses IPTV Smarters Pro for the numbered steps, since it's the more common starting point. The same details, Xtream Codes or M3U, server URL, username, password, apply identically in GSE Smart IPTV's setup screen.
Setup in 5 steps
Step 1: Install a player app
Open the App Store and install IPTV Smarters Pro (or GSE Smart IPTV if you'd rather start there).
Step 2: Add a new user profile
Open the app and tap Add user → Login with Xtream Codes API. Sent an M3U link instead? Choose the M3U URL option on the same screen.
Step 3: Enter your subscription details
Type any name you like for the profile, just a label for your own reference, then enter the username, password and server URL sent for Xtream Codes, or the M3U URL if that's what you're using. Copy and paste from the message rather than typing, since a single mistyped character is the most common cause of a failed login.
Step 4: Wait for the import
Tap Add user. The app pulls in your channel list and TV guide, usually under a minute.
Step 5: Open Live TV and pick a channel
Tap Live TV, wait for the list to fully load, and choose a channel you recognise to confirm both picture and sound play correctly.
6 tips for mobile data and picture quality
Streaming video is the most data-hungry thing most apps do on a phone, so these six habits matter more on iOS than on a device permanently parked on home Wi-Fi.
1. Use Wi-Fi whenever you can
HD streaming can burn through a meaningful chunk of a mobile data allowance quickly, especially over a longer session. Switching to Wi-Fi (Settings → Wi-Fi) whenever a network's available is the single biggest data-saving habit there is.
2. Check your data allowance before a long session
Planning to watch an extended stretch on mobile data, a full match while out, say, check your network's data allowance first, whether it's EE, Vodafone, O2, Three or a smaller provider. Streaming a couple of hours can use several gigabytes depending on quality.
3. Lower the quality setting on mobile data
Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV let you adjust playback quality in their settings. Dropping from the top setting to something lower on mobile data cuts usage significantly, with a smaller quality trade-off than you'd expect on a phone-sized screen.
4. Turn on Low Data Mode selectively
iOS's Low Data Mode (Settings → Wi-Fi or Mobile Data → your network → Low Data Mode) trims background data use across apps. Worth knowing: this can occasionally affect streaming apps too, so playback that's unexpectedly low quality or slow to start is worth checking against this setting for the network in use.
5. Download over Wi-Fi if your app supports it
Planning to watch on-demand content offline later, on a flight or somewhere with patchy signal, download it over Wi-Fi rather than streaming live over mobile data, where the app supports downloads for on-demand titles.
6. Close apps using background data
Apps refreshing in the background, social media, cloud photo backups, podcast downloads, compete for the same bandwidth as your stream. Closing them, or checking Settings → General → Background App Refresh, frees up more of your connection for smooth playback.
Casting to a bigger screen
An iPhone or iPad makes a great second screen, but if you want IPTV on the actual TV, a few options exist beyond setting up a separate device:
- AirPlay, built into iOS, can mirror or stream your iPhone/iPad screen to an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible Smart TV. Works with IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV, though performance depends on your home Wi-Fi, since AirPlay streams over the network rather than a direct connection.
- A Fire TV Stick, set up separately with TiviMate, generally gives smoother, more reliable playback than mirroring from a phone, since the stick pulls the stream directly rather than relaying it through your iPhone. See our Fire TV Stick guide.
- A Samsung or LG Smart TV with IBO Player or Hot Player installed directly is another option if you already have one. See our Samsung and LG guide.
- Apple TV works with GSE Smart IPTV directly, since it has a tvOS version, skipping the need for AirPlay mirroring from a separate device entirely.
For a big match or an extended session, setting up a dedicated TV device gives a more reliable result than relying on mirroring, though AirPlay is a perfectly reasonable option for shorter, more casual viewing.
Managing multiple profiles in the app
Both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV let you add more than one "user" or profile within the same app, useful in a couple of specific situations:
- Testing before switching. Trying a new plan or troubleshooting? A second profile with the same login lets you test settings changes without disturbing your main, working profile.
- Multiple family members on one device. More than one person using the same iPad? Separate profiles can each keep their own favourites and settings, even sharing the same underlying subscription.
- Switching between Xtream Codes and M3U to compare which loads the TV guide and library more reliably, without deleting and re-adding your main login each time.
To add another profile, repeat Steps 2 to 4 from the app's home screen rather than the initial setup flow. Most players list existing profiles and offer an "Add" option alongside them.
Battery use while streaming
Video streaming is one of the more battery-intensive things an iPhone or iPad does, worth knowing if you plan to watch for a while away from a charger:
- Lower screen brightness noticeably extends battery life during long sessions, often more than any streaming-specific setting.
- Use Wi-Fi over mobile data where possible, since maintaining a mobile data connection generally uses more battery than Wi-Fi.
- Close other apps running in the background before a long session, since background activity competes for both battery and the processing power used to decode video.
- Low Power Mode (Settings → Battery) can stretch viewing time in a pinch, though it may also reduce background app refresh and some visual effects.
Parental controls and content restrictions
Kids have access to the same device? iOS's built-in Screen Time settings (Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions) can restrict which apps are available or set time limits generally, applying to IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV the same as any other app. Within GSE Smart IPTV specifically, the app's own settings also include content restrictions for individual channels or categories, useful for finer control than a blanket app time limit gives you.
Troubleshooting
App won't accept my login details. Copy and paste the username, password and server URL exactly as sent rather than typing them, and confirm you selected the correct login type (Xtream Codes vs M3U) matching what was sent.
Channels load but the picture stutters. Check whether you're on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and if mobile, check signal strength. On Wi-Fi, see our 9 ways to fix buffering for the full troubleshooting order. The speed and stability fixes apply to iOS exactly as they do on any other device.
TV guide is missing. More common with a plain M3U link than with Xtream Codes, since Xtream Codes carries the guide data automatically. Re-add your playlist using Xtream Codes if you have both options. See our M3U vs Xtream Codes guide. More fixes, plus how to use catch-up, in our EPG and catch-up guide.
App crashes or freezes on launch. Update through the App Store first, since both IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV push regular fixes. Still happening? Delete and reinstall, then re-enter your login details.
AirPlay mirroring is laggy or drops out. A Wi-Fi issue rather than an app issue, since AirPlay streams over the home network. Move closer to the router, or set up a dedicated TV device for anything you care about watching smoothly.
App works fine on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data. Confirm the app has permission to use mobile data (Settings → the app's name → Mobile Data toggled on), since iOS sometimes restricts this by default for newly installed apps, which looks identical to a playback problem but is really a permissions setting.
Picture quality looks worse on iPhone than on other devices with the same subscription. Check the app's own quality setting first (see tip 3), since it may have been set low intentionally or by default, rather than being a limit of the device or connection.
Before you contact support
A quick self-check first usually resolves things faster, and helps us help you if it doesn't:
- Confirm your iOS or iPadOS version is reasonably current (Settings → General → Software Update), since an outdated OS occasionally causes compatibility issues with newer app releases.
- Confirm the app itself is updated through the App Store, since both apps push regular fixes for playback bugs.
- Test your login in the other app (switch from IPTV Smarters Pro to GSE Smart IPTV or vice versa) to isolate whether it's app-specific or affects your subscription details generally.
- Note whether it happens on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both, since this narrows down whether the network's the culprit.
- Have your device model and iOS version ready ("iPhone 14, iOS 18, IPTV Smarters Pro," for instance) when you message support.
The bottom line
Setting up IPTV on an iPhone or iPad takes about five minutes and makes for a genuinely useful second screen, whether that's catching a match away from the main TV or checking in on something while you're out. The main things to manage on mobile specifically are data use (see the 6 tips above) and getting the stream onto a bigger screen when you fancy one, through AirPlay or a dedicated TV device. Frequently asked questions
Which app is best for IPTV on iPhone or iPad?
IPTV Smarters Pro is the simplest starting point and the most consistent choice if you also watch on other device types. GSE Smart IPTV is a solid alternative with more customisation if you want it.
Do I need an Apple ID to use these apps?
No. Neither app requires Apple ID sign-in beyond the standard App Store download. Your Xtream Codes or M3U login is separate from any Apple account and entered directly in the app itself.
Does watching IPTV on my iPhone use a lot of data?
It can, especially in HD over an extended session. Use Wi-Fi where possible, and see tips 1 to 3 above for cutting data use on mobile data specifically.
Can I watch IPTV on my iPhone and my TV at the same time?
Yes, on the Premium plan, which allows two simultaneous connections. On Standard, only one stream plays at a time across all your devices. See the pricing page.
Does IPTV work on an iPad the same way as an iPhone?
Yes, identically. Both apps are universal, working the same way on iPhone and iPad, just with more screen space on the iPad.
Can I cast from my iPhone to a non-Apple Smart TV?
Only if the TV or a connected device supports AirPlay specifically, since it's an Apple technology. For a non-AirPlay Smart TV, a better approach is setting up IBO Player or Hot Player directly on the TV. See our Samsung and LG guide, or use a Fire TV Stick, which works with any TV regardless of brand.
What's the difference between Xtream Codes and M3U on iOS?
The same as on any device: Xtream Codes (a server URL, username and password) loads the TV guide and on-demand library automatically, while a plain M3U link is a single playlist URL that may only load the channel list. See our full comparison.
Can I use Split View on iPad while watching IPTV?
Yes, both apps support iPadOS's Split View and Slide Over multitasking, so you can watch in a smaller window while browsing, messaging or working in another app. Picture quality can dip slightly in a smaller window on some connections, so for anything you want to watch closely, full-screen still gives the best result.
Does Do Not Disturb or Focus mode affect playback?
No, Focus modes only affect notifications and alerts, not app functionality or playback. Streaming continues normally regardless of your Focus or Do Not Disturb settings.
Does the app need to stay open to keep streaming?
Yes. Like most video apps, playback pauses if you fully leave the app or lock the screen, since iOS suspends background video for most third-party apps to save battery. Picture-in-picture is the exception, where supported, letting playback continue in a small floating window while you use something else.
I have an older iPhone or iPad. Will these apps still work?
Both apps support a wide range of iOS versions, but very old devices, more than five or six years, may run an iOS version too old for the current release, or struggle with 4K decoding regardless. App Store shows the app as unavailable for your device? That's the clearest sign an iOS update is needed first, if your device supports one.
Can I record or download live channels to watch later?
Live channel recording isn't a standard feature in either app. Both are built for live and on-demand streaming rather than DVR-style recording. Where a channel supports catch-up or replay, GSE Smart IPTV can surface it depending on the channel's own metadata, which varies by channel.
Can I use the same login on both my iPhone and iPad?
Yes, your Xtream Codes or M3U details work on both, and on as many devices generally as you like. How many can stream at the same time depends on your plan: Standard allows one simultaneous connection, Premium allows two. See the pricing page for the full comparison.
Does IPTV work the same on Apple TV as on iPhone and iPad?
Not identically. Apple TV runs tvOS, not iOS, with its own app installation and interface. GSE Smart IPTV has a tvOS version working directly on Apple TV with the same Xtream Codes or M3U login. IPTV Smarters Pro's Apple TV availability varies, so check the tvOS App Store for your model.
